Media freedom has been one of the most severely affected sectors under the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan, with many independent news outlets either shut down or forced to adhere to strict government guidelines. However, some outlets continue to defy these restrictions, notably Tolo TV, one of Afghanistan’s leading television channels. Despite the risks, Tolo TV has managed to persist, providing vital news and educational content to Afghan citizens. Saad Mohseni, the founder of Tolo TV, has been vocal in advocating for international engagement with the Taliban to prevent Afghanistan from becoming isolated. He emphasizes the importance of supporting Afghanistan’s media landscape, especially to uphold the rights of women and girls. Tolo TV remains a significant platform for Afghan citizens, particularly women, to access important information that would otherwise be censored, making it a crucial player in the preservation of freedom of speech in the country.
